An oil changes is one of the most crucial services your vehicle needs to maintain reliability and performance standards. Your engine oil does a lot for you and your vehicle. First, the oil lubricates the moving parts of your engine, this prevents metal to metal contact and reduces friction which in turn causes heat. While your engine does need to stay warm to operate it can easily overheat if there is not enough engine oil in your car, truck or SUV.
Second, your oil can give you early warning signs that something is critically wrong with your vehicle. Like the canary in the coal mine, if something is not working properly you will most likely see signs of it in your oil. Pop your hood every once in a while when you stop at the gas station and check your engine oil levels. If the oil is low simply purchase a quart and fill it back up but if it has a burnt smell and dark color to it then you most likely need an oil change.
Other symptoms and warning signs include a gritty texture to your oil, this could mean that your oil filter needs to be replace because it no longer filtering out the debris. If it is a milky white color this could mean that water is getting into your engine oil lines and needs to be corrected. If you do see anything unsettling or suspicious when checking your oil be sure to call Sutton Automotive and we’ll help you out right away.
Third, your oil cleans out your engine. As it circulates through your vehicle the engine oil picks up bits of grime, dust and debris that builds up in your engine over time. It then deposits these contaminants in the oil filter. Once the oil filter becomes saturated with debris it is no longer effective and must be replaced. The old rule of thumb was to get your oil changes every 3 months or 3,000 miles.
Most modern vehicles can now go between 4,000 miles and 5,000 miles before needing an oil change. But it is important not to skip this integral part of your vehicle maintenance program because your car, truck or SUV still needs to be inspected by a professional technician regularly to ensure that you can continue with your daily commute to work or school.
